The mission of the Cape Mendocino Lighthouse Society is to maintain the nonprofit Cape Mendocino Lighthouse museum as a historical landmark in Shelter Cove, California and to provide visitors access during the summer months.
The Cape Mendocino Lighthouse is maintained by a group of volunteer docents. The lighthouse is operated in the summer months as an open museum. The Cape Mendocino Lighthouse Preservation Society is a nonprofit funded by generous donations from visitors.
The Cape Mendocino Lighthouse was moved to Shelter Cove from Cape Mendocino in 1998. It opened to the public in May of 2000. The nonprofit society raised the money and recruited the volunteers for the move project. The society is responsible for the maintenance of the lighthouse museum and has a group of volunteer docents that open it for visitors in the summer. The lighthouse building is owned by Humboldt County and it is located on Bureau of Land Management land in Mal Coombs Park in Shelter Cove, California.
It’s going to be a busy Memorial Day weekend in the cove and the kick-off is hotdog BBQ at the Cape Mendocino Lighthouse in Mal Coombs park on Friday May 27th starting at 11am. The lighthouse board wishes to thank the Shelter Cove community for stepping up to help make up for the loss of donations from lighthouse visitors since we had to be closed for two summers due to COVID. So come out Friday May 27, 2022 from 11am for the opening and grab a complimentary hotdog* and bottled water. *donations accepted The lighthouse will be open this summer everyday from 11am - 3pm starting the Friday before Memorial Day (May 27, 2022) through Labor Day (subject to availability of docents). We have a plexiglass screen on the desk to protect our volunteer docents along with an electronic filter that can remove COVID from the air. Masks for visitors are not required but are available for docents and visitors who want them along with the ever popular hand sanitizer. If you ever want to provide a donation you can stop by the lighthouse during hours of operation or check our website. Thanks Shelter Cove!
